More than 900 guests filled the Adelaide Convention Centre for the prestigious 2015 HIA-CSR South Australia Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom awards dinner, which saw more than 60 awards presented for excellence in housing, kitchen and bathroom design.

Hocking Constructions’ winning entrant, a striking two-storey custom build with a mixed-material facade, lap swimming pool and abundance of glass, was praised by the judges’ panel, who commented on its “clever use and seamless amalgamation of varying building materials”.

The Sunday Mail HIA Readers’ Choice award, voted for by our readers for family-friendly design and value for money, was awarded to Adelaide Prestige Homes’ Eden design.

With 11 major categories for housing, and four for kitchen and bathroom design, HIA SA executive director Brenton Gardener said the calibre of this year’s entrants was “astounding”.

“They showed a real attention to detail and significant quality of workmanship, despite the difficult economic times,” Mr Gardener said.

Mr Gardener said while conditions in South Australia’s residential building market in 2015 were tough and will continue through to 2016, forecasts were pointing to “a light at the end of the tunnel”.

“Looking ahead, we think these trying conditions will persist into 2016, before a recovery emerges in 2017,” he said.

“We’re forecasting around 9600 new homes to commence construction in 2016, which would be a decline of one per cent from the level in 2015.

“New dwelling commencements are forecast to then increase by five per cent to reach nearly 10,100 in 2017.”

All major winners from the night will go on to complete in the HIA Australian Housing Awards, to be held next year on Hamilton Island.

“I believe the entrants will represent South Australia extremely well,” Mr Gardener said.
